Miao ethnic group batik – decorated fan

Miao batik is a traditional wax-resist dyeing technique practiced by the Miao ethnic group, primarily located in southwestern China. This centuries-old craft involves applying hot, liquid wax to white cotton or hemp fabric in intricate, freehand patterns using a small copper or bamboo tool known as a “laji.” Once the wax hardens, the fabric is immersed in a natural dye, often extracted from indigo plants. The areas covered by wax resist the dye, preserving the original white color and creating a striking contrast once the wax is removed with hot water or by scraping.
